Special thank you to a friend, driver, and bodyguard Marcello. You always made me feel safe and had anything I needed delivered as if I were a princess. You are first rate. Please thank Pedro also and the other guard (I can't remember his name, he was always so quiet and undercover! And the other guard who was never in sight!) Marcello, you are a true professional, always on point. You were patient with my spanish so we could become friends. Thank you my friend for everything.
The service at The Cardena Richmond Suites in La Zona Rosa was unsurpassed. Exceptional! The hotel rooms were immaculate. Marcello informed me the hotel has good security and security cameras on every single block in the area. The entire hotel staff was very polite and friendly. They too were patient with my spanish so that it was possible to communicate. The young lady at the front desk does speak english fluently and she was always gracious bringing the phone to me, if I was in the internet room or in the restaurant or wherever (like they do in the movies!) Muchas Gracias a la gente de Colombia. What a beautiful people you are!
Finally thank you Toby, You are fun, generous and downright nice! It was a pleasure to get to know you.
Things I noticed about Colombia:
Of interest were the gray or camouflage planes and jets at the Colombian Airport. I thought to avoid shoot downs by narco-terroists, FARC, and ELN? Interesting. Our plane was gray as you see from the window. Notice Marcello is driving a car with 2-3 inch bullet-proof windows? I tried to zoom in on that detail.
My stepmother Yadira from Nicaragua insisted I wear a black wig to blend in! I laughed and suggested my gorilla costume. When we were to go to the top of the highest mountain (Monseratte), you'll see I'm wearing Red, White and Blue. Mi Patria. Mi bandera. On the way down the mountain, three young military men in camouflage with AK-47s (about 16 years old or younger it seemed), I caught quite the long gaze with two. They were so young. It felt so strange to see kids like that. One evening while driving through Bogota, the military was out in full force, all with AK-47s. They literally stood on every corner (2 or three per corner) along with an extra large presence of police. The elections in Venezuela I imagined. What a sight! People celebrated in the streets when they heard the vote of Chavez.
Woo!!!!! I'm still exhausted from the trip. Trying to get videos together and trying to catch up on sleep and everyday life. They say the altitude change of Bogota and Monseratte @3.152 m above the sea level takes getting used to. I've discovered it takes un-getting used to as well.
