Dude, then you were the best sax player in the world. As far as saxophone proefficiency goes, I'd say 1. Michael Brecker, 2. John Coltrane, 3. Eric Dolphy. So, if this is how you played when you first picked up a horn, you should be blowing Brecker away by now.

dont like him. Hes like these shred guitarists who play arp sweeps all day and think there great, he should slow down and FEEEELL the music, like dave brubeck man, or coltrane. that was just a mess of notes to me, never sent chills down my spine like real jazz does.

I personally own every Dolphy album he recorded, and most of his sideman works. There's loads of works of his that showcase the many facets of his playing. So Long Eric is in a sense a showcase for Eric as well, not to mention *Baron* Mingus was pleased with his work till death, so in essence it was exactly the contrast, or voice that he was seeking for his band. And we know how Mingus was. *scary*.
A tip for listening to this *mess* is break it down to groups. They are just *blocks* of notes.

You can hear that *reckless abandon* and carefree humor in his playing. Eric took inspiration from everywhere, and was interested in the most *modern* classical experiments as well. Buddy Colette recalled on this in an article I read. Practicing out of Violin books, Nicolas Slominsky's Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns, worked with George Russell..
He was in a sense another version of Trane releasing every one of his inspirations at the same time in a solo..

Wow... in one short, poorly-executed sentence you've dismissed one of the truest innovators of modern avant-garde jazz as akin to some Charvel-stroking hair farmer masturbating to an Yngwie transcription AND set yourself up as an authority on the True Nature of Jazz. It's one thing to not care for this music, but that comment really displays some serious ignorance on many levels.
Now take your Windham Hill CDs and run along before someone puts on "Interstellar Space" and scars you for life.

LOL. Wow that's a tough one to start with. It's his most popular though, and compared to the other notable Free albums, his is easily some of the most accessible IMHO, the Vibes really grounded it, yet kept it open.
Hmm. I'd start with Outward Bound by all means. It's worth it just for his flute work on Glad To Be Unhappy and April Fool. By any means it's a great starter album for his work.

ok ill give you 1 and 2 i love coltrane and brecker is b4 jesus in my bible but dolphy i wouldnt mention under the same breathe and as far as the comment "i think i played this the first time i picked up my horn" was a joke to me thats what he sounds like is someone wiggling fingers and being retarted on a sax but thats just me

Hi Fireballkiller. Coltrane loved Dolphy's playing and played with him on several albums. So if you love Coltrane but don't immediately 'get' Dolphy, maybe it's worth persevering and trying to hear what Coltrane heard in his playing.

I got t'hear the Gil Evans orchestrated Eric Dolphy album 'bout 17 years ago and I've still not recovered. Mr Dolphy's work defies the simple while discovering the simple. He knew that there are only so many notes and broke against the simple interpretation of said notes. His was the genius of Charles Ives discordance. His re-invention of 'God Bless the Child' stands today as the definitive portrayal of that blest song. Mr Dolphy described the inexpressible madness of living on this earth.

Brecker isn't my cup of tea. But Dolphy and Coltrane are the Emperor's new musicians. Everyone talks about them as gods because no one wants to say Coltrane's tone on S. Sax is pinched and 20+ cents sharp on a lot of notes...and his tone quality is hard, brittle, and unattractive. Parker are on the other hand....Parker is more my guy...
