I notice his index finger (pointing finger) presses onto the...silver metal thingy, instead of the fret itself...is that the right way to do it? someone help!

no it isn't the right way to do it, hes tilting his index finger into the fret but it looks like hes pushing the wrong bit. just tilt your finger out abit when you plat =)

I have small hands though and so this is all harder for me :/
I still can't do a simple F chord right because me fingers are too short
I'm almost 15 but I know that there are plenty of awesome guitar players out there who have just as small hands so I shouldn't blame my inability to play well on my hands but does anyone have any advice for me on that?

Here's a tip.
Play the chords until you're really cuz you can't do it. Then stop, and the next day it'll sound better. This worked for me.

thanks for the vid! something that bugged me for ages was that when i played barre chords there always seemed to be one string muted. didnt realise that the index finger needed to be so close to the fret, problem solved :)

Try 'House of the Rising Sun' by The Animals -- nice, slow tempo, good chord strumming practice.

Play 5 verses like this, then the last line of verse 6 is Am E Am C D F Am E Am F Am F...
Do two down strums of each chord, and it'll sound pretty good. Yes, the F is hard at first, but this song gives you plenty of practice at it. Master this barre chord and the others will be easy!

Try not to do it all with your thumb. Instead, use your barre finger to 'pull' the neck toward your body (while also still applying some pressure with the thumb). Experiment, and you'll find the right amount of pressure.

no such thing as a 'simple' F chord it takes the most finger strength becaause you are barring the fret closest to the neck. kepp trying those 3 barre chords and open chords, also try and get your hands on a finger strengthener device, they do wonders.
