DP was more heavy rock. Not very metal and didn`t have such a dark image like LZ or BS. Although Blackmore was into black arts for some time.

Led Zeppelin's first two albums were basically BLUES albums. Heavy? Perhaps. Metal? No. A lot of 'baby baby' stuff. Deep Purple's first album is straight from hell.
'Bloodsucker' is a good example - This song was like 1970's Cannibal Corpse - And the other songs? Livin' Wreck (hookers), Child in Time (prisoners), Bloodsucker (bastards), Into the Fire (going to hell) - If this wasn't the true beginning to Metal, than I don't know what is! ..Well..actually, Sir Lord Baltimore!

Ritchie used a Les Paul for this album.. although the promo shows him using a strat. You can hear a difference in guitar tones for the next couple of albums (Fireball and Machine Head) because he changed to a Strat.
I prefer the Les Paul sound myself.. fatter tone.
