A message from the taper of this great video:
Hi! Yes I taped that video 2004. I was recording the album, Dime Nague, with Soneros All Stars in Havana and we got a one week break during the recordings, so me and the singer Sinsonte drive down to Guantanamo hoping for a meeting with the changüí-maestro Pipi. And with some help from the local culture-workers we got a private show from the band Pipi y su Changüí.
All the best/Janne Bogdan (www.soneros.com) and (www.soneros-all-stars.com)

-----------------
Some very special rural music, a rare form known as Changui, prominent in the Guantanamo and Baracoa area. Enjoy! Notice how the bongo is played differently than other musical forms.

Lowfat80 speaks the truth he would know more than many since he is a perserver of Afro Latino musical folklore. But truthfully I as a Boricua have observed that Hatians have had there hand in the majority of Afro Caribbean Latino music. With Bomba from Puerto Rico west coast like yuba from Mayaguez, Dominican palo and Cuban Changui Haiti has had a strong influence in the development of our music.

The Changui has nothing to do with merengue, which was originaly from Puerto Rico!
However,el Son de la Ma Teora,XVI Century,Per haps, the first was played by the"Dominicas" sisters Teodora And Micaela Gines!Ask some cuban about it and some refuse to accept it ,that these sisters from Hispanola(La Espanola-now Santo Domingo)were the first Soneras!

yes i'm a musician of 30 years, although no expert in latin music. The bongo playing just seems weird to me, he seems to be in his own world and not playing to compliment the music

It seems like he gets off to a rough start, I must question if those bongos are even tuned. He is not playing a basic pattern as you may in salsa such as the "Martillo", heis doing a lot of "repiques" which are even used in salsa to add feeling to the tune, I think this guy is just full of feeling, and not that off except for the beginning, audio quality plays a big role in our perception,I think he is not bad just soulfoul, he probably does not like being held back by the basics
