This project is a collaboration of two sister charter schools in San Francisco, City Arts and Technology (CAT) and Metropolitan Arts and Technology (METRO) High Schools. Our first trip took place in April, 2007. We planned a twelve-day trip to Granada, Nicaragua during spring break in order to help with the development of a school for the disabled.
La Escuela Especial de Artesanías Populares is the only school for adolescents and adults with disabilities in that region of Nicaragua. Due to economic and political conditions, the school is struggling to stay afloat. Our goal is to continue assisting this school, which provides a safe and nurturing environment for people with mental and physical disabilities, and encourages them to learn and thrive in their community.
In addition to working with La Escuela Especial this past spring, we created a short film documenting our experience. During our time there, our students stayed with host families arranged through La Escuela Especial. This proved to be a valuable cultural and linguistic experience for the students. For the students and chaperones the trip was more than just an opportunity to travel; it was a chance to meet new people, immerse ourselves in a different culture and broaden our understanding of the world around us.
The cost of the trip is approximately $1200 per participant. In order to finance our first trip as well as contribute financially to the valuable efforts of La Escuela Especial, we worked hard all year at bake sales, car washes, candy sales, a soccer game and other fundraising efforts. We will, of course, continue these fundraising efforts. However, in order to ensure that this opportunity continues to be available to all students and especially to students who wouldn't otherwise have the chance to travel abroad, we hope to inspire individuals and organizations to help sponsor and sustain this important exchange project for this year and years to come.
